Holiday cottage kitsch

Airbnb holiday cottages may at first glance seem perfectly immaculate and tasteful – and should be for the prices they go for in Cornwall – but for me it’s all in the details. The above photo was taken of a window sill at one such cottage in Chacewater, near Redruth. It’s hard to know where to start. The three vulgar books may be the least offensive. Autobiographies by Sharon Osbourne and Cheryl Cole, and Twilight’s Child by Virginia Andrews, apparently the third novel of five in the Cutler series. Maybe there’s an argument that you’re on holiday, you just want some light reading. I don’t know, to me crap is crap, these books are an insult to any bookshelf.

Then we come to the white elephant in the room, a bookend statue of a naked woman lying on her back, legs up in the air, holding a dog between her feet. The dog definitely looks like he’s about to slide down her legs. This has been part of a very occasional series on bestality in art – see below. Thank God for the Ecover washing up liquid. We need some standards.
